Uniform approximation by (quantum) polynomials
We show that quantum algorithms can be used to re-prove a classical theorem in approximation theory, Jackson’s Theorem, which gives a nearly-optimal quantitative version of Weierstrass’s Theorem on uniform approximation of continuous functions by polynomials. We provide two proofs, based respectively on quantum counting and on quantum phase estimation.
متن کاملLegendre polynomials Triple Product Integral and lower-degree approximation of polynomials using Chebyshev polynomials
In this report, we present two mathematical results which can be useful in a variety of settings. First, we present an analysis of Legendre polynomials triple product integral. Such integrals arise whenever two functions are multiplied, with both the operands and the result represented in the Legendre polynomial basis. We derive a recurrence relation to calculate these integrals analytically. W...
متن کاملUniform approximation by discrete least squares polynomials
We study uniform approximation of differentiable or analytic functions of one or several variables on a compact set K by a sequence of discrete least squares polynomials. In particular, if K satisfies a Markov inequality and we use point evaluations on standard discretization grids with the number of points growing polynomially in the degree, these polynomials provide nearly optimal approximant...
متن کاملThe Degree of Approximation for Generalized Polynomials
The classical Mu'ntz theorem and the so-called Jackson-Muntz theorems concern uniform approximation on [0,1 ] by polynomials whose exponents are taken from an increasing sequence of positive real numbers A. Under mild restrictions on the exponents, the degree of approximation for A-poly nomials with real coefficients is compared with the corresponding degree of approximation when the coefficien...
متن کاملBehavior of Polynomials of Best Uniform Approximation
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the polynomials {Pn(f)}'t' of best uniform approximation to a function f that is continuous on a compact set K of the complex plane C and analytic in the interior of K, where K has connected complement. For example, we show that for "most" functions f, the error f -Pn(f) does not decrease faster at interior points of K than on K itself. We also describe...
